“The Dark Side of Grace” – Mark 15:33-41

The Dark Side of Grace In 2013 I preached a sermon on “The Dark Side of Grace” from Psalm 22. Psalm 22 gives us a preview of the crucifixion some 1,000 years in advance of the actual event.

Today, I preached another sermon on “The Dark Side of Grace” but this time it was from Mark 15:33-41. Both messages describe the same event but from slightly different vantage points.

“Portrait of a Spiritual Defection” – Mark 14:66-72

Portrait of a Spiritual DefectorAfter more than 2 1/2 years in Mark we only have 9 weeks or so left in this precious book. This  morning we looked at verse 66-72 and the “Portrait of a Spiritual Defection”.  The story of Peter’s denial of Christ paints a three step process of spiritual defection. Spiritual defectors 1) Create Distance from Christ, 2) Crave the approval of the Crowd, 3) Cast Aside the Lord Jesus Christ.

“The Trial of Jesus” – Mark 14:53-65

The Trial of Jesus From the darkness of the Garden of Gethsemane Mark takes us to the perversity of a kangaroo court in the house of the High Priest Caiaphas in Mark 14:53-65. The main point that Mark is making in this passage is to highlight the innocence of Christ and the perversity of the Sanhedrin in condemning him. He does this by brining the readers attention to three of the greatest miscarriages of justice that the world has ever known 1) The Irrefutable Innocence of Christ, 2) The True Revelation of Christ, 3) The Blasphemous Abuse of Christ.

“The Arrest of Jesus” – Mark 14:43-52

The Arrest of JesusMark 14:43-52 is one of the darkest passages in the entire gospel of Mark, because it records the arrest of Jesus Christ. The point of the passage is to leave us looking at Jesus as He is utterly forsaken by everyone. This morning I had the privilege of taking our church on a tour of the garden and pointing out three of the darkest places in this account, 1) The Intimacy of the Betrayal, 2) The Hypocrisy of the Arrest, 3) The Forsakenness of the Savior.

“Understanding Baptism”

Understanding Baptism Cool Community Church is getting ready for a very special baptism service on August 17th. We’ll be going down to the American River that evening and having a baptism service with 10 or 12 members of our church family.

Here’s a link to the video of last year’s service.

In light of this special event I decided to preach on “Understanding Baptism” this morning. If we’re going to understand what baptism is about we have to at least understand that 1) Baptism is about the Gospel, 2) Baptism is about Obedience, 3) Baptism is about Resolve

“The Last Supper” – Mark 14:12-21

We’re back in the Gospel of Mark today with the first half of Mark’s account of the Last Supper.  The two main points that Mark is making in Mark 14:12-21 is that 1) Jesus is in absolute control, even over his own betrayal, 2) Judas is absolutely responsible for betraying Christ. There are few passages in the Bible where the absolute sovereignty of God and the absolute moral responsibility of man come into clearer focus than right here.

“The End is Near – Beware” – Mark 13:5-8

The End is Near - Beware We’re continuing with Mark this week tackling verses 5-8. Mark 13 is about many things. It’s about the end of the temple, the end of the nation of Israel, the end of the life of Christ, but more than anything it’s about us and how we should live. The first thing that Mark call us to in this passage is that we should “Beware”.

“The End is Near” – Mark 13

The End is Near (Mark 13) We dove into the deep end of the pool yesterday with Mark chapter 13. Mark 13 is about the end, it’s about the end of the temple, the end of the life of Christ and the end of all things. Yesterday, I decided to take one Sunday to give a broad overview of the chapter emphasizing the central truth that Mark wants to convey to his readers: Prophesy is not meant to satisfy our curiosity, it is meant to spur us on to greater holiness.
