Piper’s Thoughts on the 2008 Election

I just watched Piper’s video on the 2008 election and it is outstanding. Thanks to Between two Worlds for turning me on to it.

Listen Carefully to this Moment for the History Books

You might have to listen to this a couple of times to get the humor, but trust me it’s worth it.

What Does Barack Obama Think about Babies???

This video reminded me a lot of what I was just preaching about in James 4:2 – “You desire and do not have, so you murder.” When did hating babies become acceptable behavior for a presidential candidate or is that above his pay grade as well?

The second video is John Piper and is titled “Abortion is About God.” I’m putting it alongside of the Obama excerpt because of the striking contrast between these two men.

McCain for President…

I have to admit that when I first found out that John McCain was the Republican nominee for the presidency, my heart sank pretty hard. My initial reaction was “How on earth can I vote for this guy in good conscience?” I’ve talked to a number of Christians who have expressed the same feelings and many who have entertained notions of not voting at all, because they find many of Senator McCain’s positions so distasteful. However, after reading a few articles today about last night’s symposium between John McCain and Barack Obama I have to admit that I feel a little less queasy about voting for him.
National Review online has a great piece on last night’s event (which I highly recommend if you’re interested at all in this subject) that can be found here. Here’s my favorite quote: The fact is, John McCain has lived a much bigger life than Barack Obama. That’s not a slam at Obama; McCain has lived a much bigger life than most people. But it still made Obama look small in comparison. McCain was the clear winner of the night.
John Mark Reynolds also has an excellent post here about the event. Reynolds writes, “John McCain was better than Senator Obama. I actually liked John McCain, liked him, for the first time in this campaign.
The more I contemplate this particular presidential election the more thankful I am that John McCain is the Republican nominee. That’s certainly not because I agree with all of his policies, it’s actually because I disagree with so many of them. There is a terrible tendency in evangelicalism to look to politics, especially the Republican presidential nominee as a temporary messiah until Jesus comes. The reality is that Jesus Christ is the only perfect political ruler (don’t forget that He is often referred to as a King), so since He is not running for president this year we are left with two lesser men to choose from. So, am I excited that John McCain is the Republican candidate? “No,” he’s not as good as Jesus, but are his policies more likely to reflect those of the King of Kings? I’ll leave that up to you to decide. The fact that John McCain is so much less than evangelicals had hoped for should make us grateful that it is Jesus Christ who, “changes times and seasons; he removes kings and sets up kings; he gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to those who have understanding…” (Daniel 2:21).
