Aftermath: What is God Calling His Church to Do in the Midst of a Moral Revolution

AftermathThis morning I preached a sermon called “Aftermath” dealing with the recent Supreme Court decision legalizing same sex marriage throughout the country. The message addresses three questions that many Christians are asking:

1) Why do Christians care so much about this issue?

  • For the Sake of Our Neighbors
  • For the Sake of Religious Liberty
  • For the Sake of Conscience

2) What does the Bible have to say about this issue?

  • Marriage is the union of one man and one woman
  • American continues to put herself in the crosshairs of divine judgment
  • We are all cut from the same cloth

3) What is God calling His church to do?

  • Don’t Panic
  • Pray
  • Grieve
  • Contend
  • Model
  • Love
  • Serve

If Anyone Sins…–1 John 2:1-2

If Anyone SinsLast year was my five year anniversary at Cool Community Church. We marked the occasion by continuing on in 1 John covering verses 1-2 of chapter two where John addresses the issue of “if anyone sins…”. In this passage John reminds his readers that if anyone sins that Jesus is the answer to their sin. Specifically, 1) Jesus is Our Advocate, 2) Jesus is our Sacrifice.

“God is Light”–1 John 1:5

God is Light1 John 1:5 is the theme verse of the entire book of 1 John. In this verse John says, “This is the message that we have heard and that we proclaim to you that God is light and in him there is no darkness at all.”

The purpose of light is to reveal. John uses this imagery to teach his readers that 1) God has revealed His character, 2) God has revealed His commands.

The Full Scope of Communion with God–1 John 1:1-4

1 JohnWe were back in 1 John this morning taking on the first four verses. In 1 John 1:1-14 John delivers an epic introduction to the theme that will occupy the rest of the book, “Communion with God.” He does so by taking in the full scope of salvation history in four verses and drawing his readers attention to three essential elements to understanding this theme 1) The Transcendence of Jesus Christ, 2) The Immanence of Jesus Christ, 3) The Indescribable Joy of Union with Christ.

“Communion with God”–1 John

Communion with God (Introduction to 1 John)Two years ago I took a class from Dr. Yarbrough on the book of 1 John. That class had such a powerful impact on my life that I decided to begin preaching through 1 John as soon as I could. Having finished the gospel of Mark late last year I began preparing for a series on 1 John and was privileged to begin that series yesterday.

I’ve titled the series “Communion with God” because I believe that is the heart of what John is communicating in this letter. Throughout 1 John the author explores three aspects of communion with God 1) True Obedience, 2) True Doctrine, 3) True Devotion.

“Teach Us to Pray”–Matthew 6:9-13

Teach Us to Pray (part 2)This has been a very special two weeks at Cool Community Church as the Lord has been teaching us how to pray. We’ve been working our way through Matthew 6:9-13 and this week we covered the last three petitions of the Lord’s Prayer. In those three petitions we learned that the life of prayer 1) Beckons us to a life of daily dependence on God, 2) Challenges us to forgive as we have been forgiven by God, 3) Invites us to find rest in the arms of God.

“Teach Us to Pray”–Matthew 6:9-12

Teach Us to PrayIt was a unique privilege to preach on the Lord’s Prayer this morning. We covered the first three petitions bringing us into the throne room of Heaven and next week we will cover the last three petitions which are meant to bring Heaven down to earth.

This morning we learned that a life of prayer 1) Ushers us into communion with God, 2) Channels our affections for God, 3) Compels us to hunger for the Kingdom of God, 4) Invites us to yield to the will of God.

A Generous Life

Living a Generous LifeGenerosity is one of the most important spiritual disciplines that God calls his children too. Tragically it’s also one of the most misunderstood, which is why it was such a joy to preach on Living a Generous Lifestyle this last Sunday. We covered three principles in the message 1) A generous life is far more about your heart than about your wallet, 2) A generous life is far more about your faith than about your checkbook, 3) A generous life is far more about your good than your goods.
