Lifelines – “God is Disappointed in Me”

lifeline_t_nv

Today I’m continuing a series of posts that I’m calling lifelines. These will will be short posts meant to address pressing concerns that all Christians face from time to time. My contention in this series is that when we encounter suffering and sorrow in this life what we need more than anything else is a lifeline to hold onto. These passages of Scripture are meant to be just that.

Zephaniah 3:17 – "The Lord your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save; he will rejoice over you with gladness; he will quiet you by his love; he will exult over you with loud singing. "

I am deeply persuaded that many Christians live the bulk of their Christian lives with an underlying sense that they have somehow disappointed God. Whether it be their latest interaction with a co-worker or a recent spat with their spouse…many of the sons of Adam live in the shadow of God’s perceived disappointment in them. That’s why Zephaniah 3:17 is such an important verse for those who struggle in this way. It is a powerful reminder that God is not disappointed in you, rather He rejoices over with gladness! God is so overjoyed with you that he actually sings over you as a proud Father sings the praises of his children.

Lifelines – “I’m Scared”

Today I’m continuing a series of posts that I’m calling lifelines. These will will be short posts meant to address pressing concerns that all Christians face from time to time. My contention in this series is that when we encounter suffering and sorrow in this life what we need more than anything else is a lifeline to hold onto. These passages of Scripture are meant to be just that.

Proverbs 29:25 – “The fear of man lays a snare, but whoever trusts in the Lord is safe.”

I hate feeling trapped. Whether it’s traffic, a crowded room or an awkward social situation being trapped is just miserable. Proverbs 29:25 reminds us that there is a trap waiting to spring on anyone unfortunate enough to fall into it and that trap/snare is “the fear of man”. The fear of man is something of a foreign concept to many evangelicals, but it essentially refers to giving men undue weight in our hearts and minds. We fear man when we are afraid of what people think of us. We fear man when we are afraid of what people can do to us. We fear man when we are afraid of what people may withhold from us. Almost all of the anxious “what if’s” that plague the hearts of the children of Adam can be traced back to the fear of man.

The only antidote to this plague is found in the second half of verse 25, “but whoever trust in the Lord is safe.” The cure to the fear of man is to trust in the Lord. To trust that He is the answer to all of the “what if’s” in this life and that He is well disposed to His children.

Lifelines – “I Am Beyond Hope…There is No Way Out”

Jeremiah 32:37 – “Behold, I am the Lord, the God of all flesh. Is anything too hard for me?”

There are many different kinds of troubles in this world. Some troubles develop gradually over time and some troubles rush upon us like a flood. Some troubles are worrisome but manageable and some troubles are so overwhelming that there seems to be no way out. It’s in the midst of these kinds of troubles that we need to be reminded that whatever difficulty we may face, God is able to help. When faced with troubles that seem to leave no room for hope let God ask you this one question, “Is anything too hard for me?” and be encouraged.

Lifelines–“God has forgotten me…”

Today I’m continuing a series of posts that I’m calling lifelines. These will will be short posts meant to address pressing concerns that all Christians face from time to time. My contention in this series is that when we encounter suffering and sorrow in this life what we need more than anything else is a lifeline to hold onto. These passages of Scripture are meant to be just that.

When I feel as God has forgotten me and I’m all alone, I need to grab hold of…

Isaiah 49:15-16 – “Can a woman forget her nursing child, that she should have no compassion on the son of her womb? Even these may forget, yet I will not forget you. Behold, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands…”

It seems like people are busier and more connected today than at any other time in history, yet modern life is often accompanied by a sense of profound loneliness. Even Christians can often times feel as if God has forgotten us. Perhaps you’ve been tempted to wonder whether God really cares about you, especially in light of what you’re facing today. Or perhaps, it’s been a long time since you came to church or even tried to pray and now you’re convinced that God has lost any interest in you. Or perhaps, you are just experiencing a profound sense of loneliness and abandonment and there doesn’t seem to be any explanation at all. Child of God, let Isaiah 49:15-16 wash over you this morning and know that He has engraved you on the palms of His hands and He has promised that He will not forget you.

Lifelines–“I Am Beyond Help…God Cannot Hear”

lifeline_t_nvI’m beginning a new series of posts today that I’m calling lifelines. These will will be short posts meant to address pressing concerns that all Christians face from time to time. My contention in this series is that when we encounter suffering and sorrow in this life what we need more than anything else is a lifeline to hold onto. These passages of Scripture are meant to be just that.

When I feel as if I am beyond help and/or that God cannot hear my cries for rescue I need to grab hold of…

Isaiah 59:1 Behold, the Lord’s hand is not so short that it cannot save; nor His ear so dull that it cannot hear.”

Every Christian experiences times when they feel hopeless, as if no one can help. Perhaps you’re experiencing a financial crisis or maybe you feel as if you’re family is falling apart. Having served in full time ministry for nearly 12 years now, I know that there are many occasions for despair in the ministry. Perhaps you feel like you can’t meet everyone expectations. Or perhaps you’re scared to death of the next meeting you’ll have with that angry man. Or perhaps you’re just plain overwhelmed in a sea of tasks that never seem to really get accomplished. These are the kinds of occasions that call out for a reminder that God’s hand is not so short that He cannot save you and a promise that His ear is not so dull that He cannot hear. Child of God know this, God is attentive to your cries and He is able to save you from all of your adversities.
